What you said is telling: "a lot of the upper level executives [at 'great' companise]...are fully engaged in their jobs." But the people who actually have to do the hard work of producing a product to be sold, they don't have time for ethos (unless that ethos is "work hard and you'll get ahead"). They're the ones most likely to to just punch in and shrug their shoulders in resignation--the goddamn clock-watchers! Are they supposed to let upper level execs have ethos FOR them, and buy what they're selling with their hearts and minds while we using their energy and brains to make someone else money? Great.

I think a lot of companies start off with a more grandiose sense behind what they're doing, and then the focus eventually gets whittled down as it grows, takes on more people, the original founders / staff gets diluted, distracted or moves on.

Also, after reading a book like "Good to Great" I realized that a lot of the upper level executives at the companies the author considers to be "great" are fully engaged in their jobs - they are passionate about ideas and thoughts and are willing to have heated debates and discussions instead of just punching in and shrugging their shoulders in resignation.

That said, yeah they do own you, but if you're going to be sell yourself you should (ideally) be into what the buyer is actually doing with your time.

Once you walk through someone else's door, sit at someone else's desk, and type on someone else's computer THEY. OWN. YOU. A business is all about "creating cash flow." Full stop. Everything else is icing they might use to try and lure you in, but it's the first thing to go when push comes to shove and rarely do they come back once they're gotten rid of. Engagement is important but seemingly diametrically opposed to the Capitalist model...

It was more of a tongue in cheek title. Somehow the extremes get amplified because they are the most controversial attitudes, and their spokespeople are the most unyielding / inconsiderate. So, if we just pay attention to the extremes (which we really seem to do as of late) it seems like there is not middle ground, even though that's false.

Why is this post entitled "There is no Middle Ground"?

The wealth of information the Internet provides doesn't automatically make anyone any smarter. The overwhelming tide, I think, has made us dumber.

We only pay attention to the LOUDEST, which is the way it's always been.
